A DECISION on plans to build houses on Westbury’s former hospital was expected next week but has been delayed again, bringing the wait to over five months past the planned decision date in February.
The long-awaited decision had been expected to come next Wednesday, but changes to the plan meant consultation was extended and the decision date moved again.
The application – now for 59 houses, down from the original 72 – has faced fierce opposition from local people since it was submitted in November last year. Many argue that health services in Westbury are too stretched, and demolishing the hospital would be a waste of the facility.
Town councillor Gordon King has campaigned alongside residents trying to save the site so it can be used for healthcare.
Cllr King this week told White Horse News, “There were changes to drainage plans in the application so the decision is now likely to be made in August or September. I think this will be the last time it’s delayed.
“I’m torn between wanting the process over and done with, and wanting to be sure that the best plan possible has been made for the site if it is approved. I absolutely plan on fighting against the application at the meeting, but I’m told the planning department is minded to support it.”
Over 150 letters were written to Wiltshire Council regarding the plans; one council officer described a “substantial level of public objection”.
Spearhead of the opposition and winner of White Horse News’s Westbury Person of the Year 2015, Erica Watson, helped start local healthcare campaign group Sensible Thinking on Patients (STOP).
The group has been vocal in its fight for healthcare facilities to be retained at the site.
Erica said, “The NHS is clearly determined to get this planning application approved. It is good they’re trying to get it right, but we’re still against the plan. Over 150 letters were written to Wiltshire Council and I didn’t see one saying it was a good idea. Unfortunately that’s not a lot, considering Westbury’s population.
“STOP will be going to the planning meeting and we urge local people to come with us and show the strength of feeling. If the plan is approved, our fight won’t be over and I hope the group has helped draw attention to the desperate need for healthcare and infrastructure improvements in Westbury.”
