PLANS to restructure the high street rotunda, which is an objective for Westbury Town Council if a grant can be achieved, could offer a variety of different ideas to make the most of the space.
The rotunda alterations were included in Westbury Town Council’s own ambitious Vision for Westbury document, which is designed to regenerate the town centre.
The plans include making the space easier for everyone to access by removing the raised flower bed and dropping the floor within the circle to street level. The town council is considering widening the current entrance and creating an area for performers/buskers in the middle of the rotunda by adding a bench-style seat around the circumference of the wall. They are also looking at the potential for design opportunities for a floor maze in the centre for children to play on, as well as adding lighting, and looking at using the space for small craft fairs and events.
The town council will appoint a landscape architect to develop these ideas and they will also consult with the public.
A statement from Westbury Town Council says, “The rotunda redevelopment is part of Vision for Westbury outcomes.
“The Vision for Westbury sub-committee has developed a scope of works to redevelop the rotunda, but this is linked to a grant from Locality, (the national membership network supporting local community organisations) and the overall proposal that we are waiting to hear back from Wiltshire Council about.
“If we receive the grant, and the works fit with Wiltshire’s proposal and there is sign off by the town council (who have already approved match funding), the Vision for Westbury sub-committee will hire a landscape architect to draft some plans that will then form part of the public consultation before final plans are prepared and the work commissioned.
“We can’t say a timeframe at the minute but will keep you posted on any developments.”
