Improvements for pedestrians and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit will be implemented in the Frogmore Road and Slag Lane area following a lengthy campaign from residents due to safety concerns.
The improvements, which will see a footway constructed along part of Frogmore Road, are due to commence in early 2025 following a successful bid for funding from Westbury’s LHFIG (Local Highway & Footway Improvement Group) and Westbury Town Council.
Following years of complaints, residents launched a petition to urge Wiltshire Council to take immediate action to improve road safety in the area last year. Concerns were raised that motorists often drive through Slag Lane at high speed and the area has become increasingly hazardous for pedestrians as there is no pavement on Frogmore Road or any kind of pedestrian crossing. Residents said that the route was particularly unsafe as it is used by children going to school.
Cllr Carole King said, “It’s great news, as it’s been a long time coming. I had a letter when I was first elected back in 2019 and it’s been ongoing since then. It’s all about pedestrian safety and making things safer for walkers.
“The 20mph speed limit is very welcome; it will make drivers slow down and be aware that this is a kind of shared space.
“The area is popular with children and families and dog walkers. You can have a nice walk here and it’s on the way to Vivash Park, so pedestrian safety is so important.
“There was a lot we couldn’t do; we couldn’t, for instance, close the road or restrict it because if there’s a problem with the bridge coming into Westbury on the A350, it’s the only alternative route. National Highways have designed that, so our hands were tied. But the improvements should make a huge difference and I’m sure will be welcomed by local residents.”
Cllr Richard Clewer, leader of Wiltshire Council said, “A successful bid for Substantive Local Highway and Footway Group funding was made by Westbury LHFIG and Westbury Town Council for pedestrian improvements on Frogmore Road linking to Slag Lane and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit on Slag Lane, Frogmore Road (between its junction with Slag Lane and Rosefield Way) and Hawkeridge Road (between Slag Lane and The Ham).
“The pedestrian improvements will include the construction of a footway along Frogmore Road from its junction with Slag Lane to its junction with Rosefield Way. This will use the existing verge and vegetated areas, as well as some of the carriageway space at certain points. Whilst some vegetation removal is necessary, replacement planting will be included as part of the scheme. An informal crossing point will also be provided across Slag Lane near the junction with Frogmore Road.
“Due to the scale of the project, the funding bid made by the LHFIG and town council was for phase one of the improvements, which will see the footway provided between Rosefield Way and the rail bridge over Frogmore Road, along with the 20mph speed limit reduction. A further bid will be made for funding for phase two, to complete the footway provision along the route.”
