WESTBURY Lions presented two local women with special honours and had a visit from a special guest at the club’s 43rd annual charter dinner this month.
The dinner, attended by most of the club’s members, was held on 4th June to celebrate 43 years since the organisation started up in Westbury.
Doreen Pearce and Anita Drago were presented with Melvin Jones Fellowship honours in recognition of their contribution to the club. The award is named after the founder of the Lions Clubs International Foundation and one of the leading awards available to Lions members worldwide.
Guests were then treated to an appearance from special guest Phil Nathan, a former director of Lions Clubs International.
Club president Jarvis Macdonald also gave a speech, as he prepares to step down at the end of the month.
Jarvis told White Horse News, “It was a super evening and, as always, very well attended by nearly 100 people. We had a great dinner, good company and some excellent entertainment.
“We were honoured to have Phil Nathan come and visit us – he’s a big deal in the Lions world and his appearances are in high demand!
“It was also brilliant to have the support of the Mayor of Westbury, cllr Stephen Andrews, and of members visiting from other nearby Lions clubs.
“I’m nearing the end of my year as president now and can say it has been absolutely magic. We’ve had a really great year and probably a record year for fundraising.
“We were also awarded by the district for recruiting the most members, and are the second biggest club in region – I think that’s quite an achievement for little old Westbury!”
Westbury Lions is a members club based around social activities and fundraising for local causes.
