Sixth form student, Callum Langley, represented Matravers School in the final of the nationwide Big Bang competition which took place in Birmingham between 13th-15th March.
Callum, a year 13 student, was one of just 200 students from across the country to make it to the final, competing to become the ‘British Young Engineer of the Year.
Callum’s entry was a small, remote-controlled submarine which he designed and built last summer as part of a Nuffield Trust placement at the University of Bath, working alongside post-graduate students.
The submarine is capable of carrying sonar imaging equipment which will allow the operator to record under water images to a depth of 300 metres. Callum designed his small, affordable, agile drone for a wide range of industrial and scientific applications.
Callum’s work was highly commended and appreciated by representatives of many businesses. Callum plans to continue to study engineering at university once he completes his A-levels.
