WESTBURY MP Andrew Murrison is helping to spearhead a campaign to protect Wiltshire’s war memorials as commemorations continue to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One.
Dr Murrison, who is MP for South West Wiltshire and the Prime Minister’s special representative for First World War centenary commemorations, has voiced his support for special workshops run by national charity Civic Voice.
The workshops, to be held in Chippenham and Salisbury, will teach people how to assess the condition of war memorials and help to protect and conserve them properly.
Andrew Murrison said, “War memorials are a key part of this country’s culture, heritage and, vitally, remembrance. It is important that we act now to save them. I regularly follow and support the work undertaken by Civic Voice and look forward to encouraging others to become involved too.”
Wiltshire has over 880 war memorials in the county, and Civic Voice is appealing for volunteers to come forward from every town to make sure they are all found and surveyed.
