THE final decision has been made to ensure ex-Matravers headteacher Nigel Gilhespy’s name is cemented into the history of the town.
Barratt Homes, developers of the new ‘White Horse View’ housing estate, have confirmed that they will name a road after the late teacher, following months of campaigning by his former students, friends and colleagues.
Local councillor Horace Prickett was amongst the campaigners and wrote to the developers to encourage their using Nigel’s name.
In reply, Barratt Homes’ James Turner wrote, “I am pleased to inform you that the development will indeed feature a street named ‘Gilhespy Way’, and it is the street that forms the entrance to the development, and will therefore be the most used and recognised. I hope that this will be to the satisfaction of the residents of Westbury.”
Cllr Prickett praised the campaigners’ efforts in a recent letter (full letter on p.17) to White Horse News saying, “I congratulate all those residents of Westbury and much farther afield for their work in achieving the naming of a road after the late Nigel Gilhespy. The process has taken much work, effort and time on your part.
“I would also like to thank all those Westbury town councillors who supported the application to Barratt’s. Many thanks to all those who helped achieve this success for their support and vision.”
