Westbury Wildcats netball team won their first match of the season on Tuesday 4th October.
Even the cold couldn’t dampen the excitement that was in the air for the first match of the season; the ladies were keen to get on court.
Despite not winning the toss for centre, the first quarter got off to a good start with Fran Wint and Rachel Simmonds getting 5 goals between them. The defence of Laura O’Hara, Sarah Thomas and Jemma Mead stood strong against a lively Devizes Hawks defence, only conceding 1 goal.
Things changed for the second quarter, with Kelly Pearce replacing Wint in the shooting circle and Pippa Brewer taking to defence. Some sharp centres and quick passing from Sadie Macoubrey and Michelle Coles in the centre third, with on point shooting from Pearce, allowed the score to head up to 15-5. A quick change in the third quarter saw Devizes step up their defence and an uneventful period ended with both teams only scoring 2.
The final quarter saw both teams come back on court with a renewed vigour. The defensive three managed to stand strong, only conceding 3 goals with Wint and Pearce sinking another 8 between them. Final score Devizes Hawks 10 Westbury Wildcats 25. Player of the match went to Kelly Pearce.
