Westbury Family History Group will welcome Robert Jago on Thursday 24th July who will tell us about Victorian street fairs, in particular those held in Trowbridge.
Robert will draw on newspaper reports of the time to give us colourful insight to the sounds and sights of the street fair.
Originally intended for the selling of food, cattle and other goods, by the Victorian times entertainment was also very much in evidence, including freak shows, music, performing animals and boxing booths. Hand driven roundabouts appeared and then with the birth of the steam engine these were used to drive them and the organs provided the music.
Robert’s entertaining talk will make the fair come alive in our minds.
The Westbury Family History Group meets every 4th Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the foyer of the Westbury’s Methodist Church. The branch has regular interesting and informative talks and discussions by members and guest speakers on all aspects of family history and general history, and welcomes anyone wishing to start their research but do not know where to begin.
