Tues 5th Oct. Hellenic League Premier Division Westbury United 5-0 Calne Town
WESTBURY wrapped up a league double over Calne with an emphatic midweek victory at Meadow Lane.
Such is their current form United have now scored 16 goals in 3 matches!
Ed Baldy returned in goal for just his second appearance of the season, club legend and Trowbridge Town player/manager Jamie Jordan slotted in perfectly at full back and Dan Demkiv made an impressive home debut. Such was their impact that Joe Stradling, Jack Biddescombe, Steve Hulbert and Mark Bowden weren’t missed!
The first half was an exciting end to end affair, Westbury held a 2-0 lead at half time but it could easily have been 3-3.
United had the first chance within a minute of kick off when Jake Hutchings fired over after a corner kick then soon after Sam Jordan forced Rich Edwards to make a save.
Home captain Dan Price was on top form all evening and made a vital interception to deny Town a goal after a well placed set piece.
Edwards made two fine saves in quick succession to deny Sam Jordan and Ryan Bole then at the other end Kieron Gleed showed great skill before Hutchings managed to deflect his effort away from danger!
Westbury started to put together some great passing moves, one of these saw Jamie Jordan and Dan Demkiv combine to set up Ricky Hulbert whose header was saved by Edwards!
Calne thought they had opened the scoring on 19 but Harvey Flippance’s finish at the end of a lovely move was disallowed for offside.
Spurred on by this United notched up a 2-0 lead with a quick double strike on 21 and 24 minutes. Firstly Ashton Shanley turned on the edge of the box and fired in a low left footer then Dan Demkiv’s powerful long range attempt was parried by Edwards but Ricky Hulbert showed composure to control the ball and put it over the line!
The visitors got up a head of steam and a series of three corners led to Nick Mills crashing a shot off the crossbar.
Edwards had to be alert when Bole tried his luck with a booming 35 yard free kick then towards half time, after Francois Allen had replaced the injured Sam Jordan, a brilliant move involving Shanley, Ben Griffiths and Ricky Hulbert led to Allen bringing yet another save out of the Calne keeper.
Allen went close twice more soon after the break, firstly unable to get a touch to Jamie Jordan’s low cross then heading wide from Dan Demkiv’s cross.
Town nearly got themselves back in the match on 53 when Oscar Webster’s shot was fumbled wide by Baldy, but that was as close as they came as Westbury increased their advantage then dominated the rest of the match.
Awesome pace by Dan Demkiv allowed him space to play in Allen and, after Edwards somehow blocked the ball twice, Allen made it 3-0 at the 3rd attempt.
A clever one-two between Griffiths and Dan Demkiv led to Griffiths having an effort that dropped onto the roof of the net.
United made a few midfield substitutions and one of these, Joey Cunningham shot wide from 20 yards.
Dan Demkiv was determined to get his name on the scoresheet and, after Edwards had made a further save, in the next attack he was fouled and stepped up to score the 4th from the penalty spot.
With time nearly up Cunningham impressively fired in to complete the 5-0 result.
