A fundraiser organised by a local woman has raised over £1,000 for Parkinson’s disease research after her husband was diagnosed with the disease 13 years ago.
The event was organised by local residents Heather Woodall, whose husband Woody was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and Sally Callaway. Held at Heywood and Hawkeridge Village Hall earlier this month, the event featured stalls, a clothing sale, a photography competition, and refreshments. The funds raised will go to Parkinson’s UK to support research.
Heather, who has been dedicated to raising money for the charity for the past five years, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “We had a resounding success at our fundraiser for Parkinson’s,” she said. “A group of Parkinson’s sufferers who attended were delighted to see how busy it was. Our volunteers were outstanding!”
Heather and Woody have lived in the Westbury area for over 40 years. Over time, Woody’s condition has gradually worsened, leaving him wheelchair-bound and struggling with muscle wasting and speech difficulties. Despite ongoing research, there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, and Heather hopes that the funds raised will contribute to further research and, eventually, finding a cure.
All funds raised from the event will go to the charities Parkinson’s UK and Mind, supporting further research and assistance for those affected by Parkinson’s and mental health issues.
