AN organiser of Westbury’s Pudsey Family Fun Day has sung the guests’ praises after heavy rain blighted July’s Children in Need fundraiser.
The event, which took place on Saturday 19th July at Oval Peugeot in the West Wilts Trading Estate, had a fun fair and boot sellers amongst the attractions.
However, the afternoon be abandoned when storms flooded the site in a matter of hours.
Nigel Hemmens, of Oval Peugeot & Trowbridge Carnival Committee, said, “A massive thunder storm with quantities of rain I have never seen before flooded the whole site within twenty minutes.
“We decided that it may only be a short spell of rain and that it would drain away quickly, but the rain did not abate and we were close to six inches deep in places. We had to call it a day and cancel the event.”
Despite the day being cut short, Nigel had only good things to say about the people who attended, “Not one person left before we informed them of our decision to cancel. They were all soaked to the skin and spent most of their time trying to stop the exhibits from floating away.
“I cannot thank them all enough for their solidarity and commitment to the cause, I only had positive comments from them and no gripes at all. It has renewed my faith in mankind, and I am honoured to have spent a wet morning with them.”
He was also impressed by the Mayor of Westbury, who “was prepared to step into the murky depths without batting an eyelid.”
The exact amount raised won’t be known until later in the year, but when asked if he would repeat the event, Nigel replied, “Lets see what the weather forecast is, shall we?”
