1st Westbury Scout Group have been celebrating this week.
Diane Perrett, secretary of the group reported, “At the annual general meeting we said goodbye and thank you to two very long standing members of the committee and seven young people were invested in the newly opened Explorer Unit.
“Dave Wakefield (chairman) and John Osborne (treasurer) were both presented with their Chief Scout’s 30 Years Service Awards by Sue Duncan, district commissioner. Pat Maslin, group scout leader then gave a short rundown of their hard work and dedication to the Westbury Scout Group over the years, especially the funding and building of our wonderful HQ. She then presented each with a leaving gift.
“Thursday evening saw seven young people being invested in the new Explorer Unit by Stuart Bath, district explorer scout commissioner. The group restarted in March with a new name –The Vipers, chosen by the members. They meet every other Thursday during term time, planning their own activities. They are very excited about attending Gilwell 24 -24 hours of activities and no sleep!

“It was sadly reported at the AGM that leaders numbers have reduced from 11 to six over the past year, due to new babies and health problems. This leaves the group in a difficult position trying to continue to offer a full and varied programme for children and young people aged six -18.
“Working with these children and young people within the Scout Association is a wonderful enlightening experience which brings its own rewards for all who are involved with them.
“We are urgently looking for help especially with our Cub Section (eight-10½ years) and for an assistant leader with the Explorers. If you feel you have enthusiasm and some time to offer and would like further details, please contact Pat Maslin, tel: 01373 826364. No experience required as training is provided.
