Hair and beauty NVQ year 12 students at Matravers, guided by their teacher Mrs Drewitt, recently took part in a community project with a difference.
They had been eager to try out their skills on real models and the opportunity was given to them by the services of Adam Diver GSM at Warminster Garrison. For four weeks, he allowed some of his men to grow their hair from a standard number one or two cut, so that the team of students had real hair to cut and real people to practise on.
Matravers School was also pleased to welcome the team from the Mane Event hair salon in Trowbridge. Owner Deb and chief stylist, Chris, both offered support, guidance and tips to the students. They guided the students through different techniques and showed them it is not all about haircutting; it is about chat and being cheerful too.
All the clients seemed really impressed by the results; no tears, just smiles! They even smiled for the cameras as they were filmed by Forces TV, interested in this unique liaison. The guests were also invited to stay for a canapé reception, which was prepared by the catering and hospitality students.
Headteacher, Dr Riding said, “The purpose of this event was to work with our community; the local garrison and a local business.
“The army clients each offered to pay for their hair and nails, but we were happy to have this real-life experience and to hone in our talents. In the end, it was decided that the money should be donated to a worthwhile military- based charity and who better that the Royal British Legion?
“Two representatives from the Legion came down and not only received a cheque for £250 but one also got a great new haircut and was delighted by the service and the school!
“Matravers School is always happy to support military charities and this offered us an excellent opportunity to do so.”
