ALZHEIMER’S Support is inviting people with dementia to join Music for the Mind, the charity’s local friendly singing groups in Westbury Leigh and Bradford on Avon and the Memory Café in Westbury.
At Music for the Mind, members sing songs old and new, as well as harmonies and actions songs that help physical co-ordination. The groups are led by professional singing teachers who are trained in dementia awareness and supported by teams of dedicated volunteers.
Kate Sharpe, acting head of Alzheimer’s Support’s Community Services said, “Our groups are very relaxed and welcoming and have a real family feel to them. Not only do they offer the opportunity to take part in an uplifting and enjoyable activity, they’re also a great place to make friends. And you do not have to be a good singer to join Music for the Mind. We look forward to welcoming new members.”
“We also have some wonderful opportunities for volunteers, so if you are friendly, empathetic and enjoy working with people with dementia, please get in contact.”
The Westbury Leigh group meets on Thursdays 2pm to 3.30pm at Westbury Leigh Community Hall, BA13 3SQ; the Bradford on Avon group meets from 10am to 11.30am on Mondays at the Wiltshire Music Centre on Ashley Road, BA15 1DZ.
The Memory Café in Westbury is a chance for people with dementia and their family carers to meet others in a similar situation and speak informally to a dementia professional. Each session also has a speaker or entertainment and meets on the second Wednesday of the month, 4.30pm to 6pm at Grassacres Hall in Eden Vale Road, BA13 3NZ.
