A TAPESTRY reflecting the life and history of the Ethandun area, now Edington, was revealed last month following two years of work by local residents and school children.
The tapestry was the idea of Edington resident and parish councillor, Sandie Lewis, who was inspired to start the project after a visit to France and a trip to see the Bayeux.
The launch of the tapestry took place at The Parish Hall in Edington on Monday 17th June. The people who made the tapestry, including pupils from Holy Trinity Primary, came together with friends and supporters from the village in a happy lunch to celebrate the completion of this two year project.
This community project was completed by a group of villagers led by Sandie Lewis, Claire Yardley, Jan Richardson and Sandra Salmons, with workshop support from talented crafter Lucy Poloniecka.
Project leader, Sandie Lewis said, “It is worked on vintage linen and like many tapestries is actually in a variety of media including drawing, painting, photocopying, collage, embroidery, quilting and knitting.
“The Henning family completed two panels, the railway bridge and Edwardian scenes. Jan Richardson and Sandra Salmons made the priory and monastery panel. Claire Yardley made the panel with Cecilia stepping out.
“I made the flora and fauna panel, with input from Karen Wright, Jane Drake and Sarah Girt.
“The wonderful Battle of Ethandun panel was undertaken by the children of Holy Trinity Primary School with assistance from Ann Heath. Framing was undertaken without charge for labour, by villager Roy Zaman.
“Funding was provided by Westbury Area Board, Station Yard Edington, The May Ball Edington, Edington Fair and private donations.
“Although offers of a permanent home for the panels include venues further afield, local people wish for the tapestry to remain in the village. This is currently being explored and it is hoped they will be unveiled in their new home very soon.”
