The Hilly Helmet Challenge is back for its eighth year, raising vital funds for Brain Tumour Support.
The 4.5-mile multi-terrain run is due to be held on Wednesday 7th August, starting in Westbury.
Orange Helmet Events founder Robin-Mark Schols, pictured, is a keen runner who has lived through his own brain tumour experience. “While in recovery, Robin’s doctors said that he had to protect his head in case he fell while out running, so he wore a cycling helmet, which gave him the idea for the Hilly Helmet Challenge,” explained one of the organisers, Sarah Emery.
“Participants will set off on the 4.5-mile route from the Leighton Recreation Centre in Westbury, up onto the Imber Range Path and then down through the woods, taking in beautiful views along the way, all while wearing a helmet just as Robin did.”
All proceeds from the event go to Brain Tumour Support, which uses donations to help fund vital support for people by offering free counselling, group sessions, telephone support as well as end-of-life and bereavement support.
This year’s theme is Henry VIII and runners are encouraged to decorate their helmets in a fun and entertaining way to be in with the chance of winning a prize.
All participants will take home a special pottery memento made by the Westbury-based company, White Horse Pottery. During the event, local sports shop Sportsbug, which is based in Melksham and Trowbridge, will have a pop-up shop.
