WESTBURY have now won three out of three in their pre-season, although the club say the ongoing Covid-19 situation caused chaos at the weekend!
On Saturday 10th July United triumphed 3-0 at Amesbury Town; Ryan Bole netted direct from a corner and Sam Jordan scored twice.
Then, on Saturday 17th July, after both Trowbridge Town and Tadley Calleva pulled out due to the virus, a desperate search for opponents ended with Radstock Town saving the day and visiting Meadow Lane on a very hot afternoon.
Callum Demkiv put Westbury ahead when through one-on-one. At the other end Lewis Porter saved a penalty but soon after Radstock equalised.
Francois Allen fired in from 20 yards to restore United’s lead early in the second half.
The heat seemed to affect Town more and the hosts took advantage to run out 4-1 winners with Ricky Hulbert and Demkiv scoring in the closing stages.
There are three further home friendlies before the season starts.
On Saturday 24th July the current First Team take on a Legends squad at 1pm. Then Trowbridge Town visit on Wednesday 28th (7.30pm ko) before Cornish team Dobwalls visit on Saturday 31st for a 3pm kick off.
After a still unknown midweek league game, the FA Cup gets underway on Saturday 7th August when Christchurch will be the opponents.
• THINGS are looking good for the new season at Meadow Lane.
Club clean up gang volunteer Terry Morgan told White Horse News, “The pitch is looking immaculate. The ground is looking better than it has for years because of the hard work the clean up gang put in every week.
“The First Team have had their first meaningful friendly, beating Warminster Town 9 – 3 in Warminster, and we’ve been strengthened by the signing of a very experienced defender in Jack Vallis. The First Team is also looking forward to playing in a new league, the Hellenic Premier League, after Step 6 of the football pyramid was reorganised by the FA.
“Our Reserve Team gained promotion last season and now play in the First Division of the Trowbridge and District Football League and have had some very encouraging friendly results.
“We are also next season running a third A or Development Team who will play in the Second Division of the Trowbridge and District Football League because there are just too many young lads who wanted to play for us but couldn’t be accommodated in two teams.”
The clubhouse is now open on a much more regular basis, Terry said, as there are people who are keen and interested in running it.
“We showed the England Euro 2020 games on six separate screens, which went down really well. We are also running a summer skittles competition which started on 9th July.
“We are also having outdoor car boot sales on Sundays, weather permitting. We have had our first bingo evening that went really well, with more being organised.
“So all in all, things are looking up. Of course we can always do with more volunteers, especially on match days.”
