West of England League Wiltshire Division Westbury versus Corsham at Leighton Sports Ground. Westbury on Saturday 7th August
WESTBURY entertained local rivals Corsham in the latest West of England Wiltshire Division match hoping to put behind them last week’s narrow away loss against Royal Wootton Bassett and also gaining revenge for an earlier loss in the season.
Westbury made 5 changes from last week’s match with Kane Scott, Dan Gill, James Clack, Faizal Faizey and Jack Bates (on his first team league debut) coming in for James Mawson, James Hudson, Aidan Wicks, Matt Greatley and Steve Clare.
Westbury won the toss and with the forecast of heavy rain put their opponents in to bat.
Corsham opened with Tom Abbott and Martin Roberts and they made a bad start. When the total reached 12 Westbury struck for the first time with Abbott out leg before by Andy Carroll for 5. Shortly afterwards Westbury took their second wicket when Andy Carroll bowled Ben Oakley for 0.
Then the Westbury captain came to the fore by taking the third wicket by having Tom Young leg before for 1 with the total at 14. Martin Roberts was joined by young Josh Stanley and they weathered the superb opening spell by the Westbury bowlers Carroll and Oakley and eventually started to play their shots.
At 2 o’clock the heavy rain arrived and, after waiting an hour, the two captains Ned Jones (Corsham) and Richard Oakley (Westbury) and the umpires Clive Rees and Clive Jackson all agreed that the match could not continue with the square very wet and more rain in the vicinity.
• Westbury’s remaining figures are on Sat 21st August versus Devizes away and on Sat 28th August versus Warminster home.
