PROJECT, ‘yarn bomb’ the war memorial in Westbury with handmade poppies has almost reached its target, with nearly 2,000 poppies donated.
Emma Symonds from EJ Crafts on Maristow Street came up with the idea to cover the war memorial in poppies for Remembrance Sunday after seeing something similar in Warminster.
Emma said, “It feels really good to nearly be at the target of 2,000 poppies. I am so grateful for everyone’s help. So many people have helped from the community like the Lions Club, the emergency services call centre in Devizes where my sister-in-law works, and lots of individuals from Westbury.
“This really shows that Westbury has a great community spirit when it matters.”
The poppies will be put on the railings around the rotunda, the railings on the war memorial and, weather permitting, spread over the garden behind the war memorial over the Remembrance weekend.
People still wanting to contribute to the ‘yarn-bombing’ can attend Emma’s ‘Knit and Natter’ session, which is held every other Wednesday 6.00pm-7.30pm and every Saturday afternoon. Up until Remembrance Sunday, Emma will be holding poppy knitting workshops where you can come and knit or crochet poppies and make new friends. The cost for both sessions is just a donation towards refreshments.
For those people already in the festive spirit, Emma will be hosting a ‘Crochet your own Christmas decoration’ workshop on Tuesday 7th November from 6-9pm. The workshop will be led by Katie from Bramble Blake’s Crafty Makes who will support people in making the baubles, snowmen and all things festive to give as gifts or to hang on their own Christmas trees. The workshop costs £30, with all materials and equipment needed provided, as well as refreshments. Space is limited to seven people.
