A Westbury man is taking part in a fundraising abseil to raise money for the charity that helped his family when his daughter was severely ill.
Guy Aked will abseil down the 170-metre Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth on Sunday 27th July. He is hoping to raise £500 for CLIC Sargent, the Cancer and Leukaemia in Children charity, who enabled the family to stay close together when Guy’s daughter was recovering.
Guy said, “My daughter, Charley, was airlifted to the Bath RUH in July 2012, just after her 1st birthday, with double pneumonia.
“Following extensive tests she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and was transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital where she spent the next seven months. After two unsuccessful rounds of chemotherapy Charley’s only hope of recovery was a stem cell transplant. Fortunately, a donor was found, thanks to the Anthony Nolan register.
“After her transplant in December 2012 Charley suffered serious complications, but thankfully pulled through. Charley is now in remission and has been back home for a year, gradually recovering from the severe treatment.
“Throughout the difficult period in hospital my wife, Julie, and I were given a room in Sam’s House, one of CLIC Sargent’s homes from home in Bristol, enabling us to both stay close to the hospital and Charley.
“We could not have coped without Sam’s House and the amazing staff who run it. We need to ensure the charity can continue to help other families in the future.”
