NEWS that Westbury could have a post office service restored to the town centre has been welcomed by the town council and local residents. The Post Office has confirmed that an application to re-open a town centre branch is currently under way.
Westbury has been without a town centre post office since January of last year after the supermarket giant Morrisons, which bought out the convenience store and newsagent chain McColl’s in 2022, took the decision to close the Westbury McColl’s and its post office due to the unprofitability of the store.
The only alternative available post office services locally can be found at The Ham (2.5 miles away) or Bratton (4.8 miles away) following the closure of the Dilton Marsh post office in December of last year.
A Post Office spokesperson says that the application will take four to six weeks to process and if it is successful, the Post Office will confirm a proposal to restore a post office in Westbury town centre. No information on where the post office service could be located or the name of the applicant was provided.
Westbury Town Council said, “Our councillors have been in regular contact with the external affairs manager for the Post Office in the South of England and Wales region since before the closure of the High Street post office in January 2022 and we have actively helped to promote the Post Office vacancy in the town centre.
“The Post Office have informed us that they are processing an application to run a post office at a town centre location. The application is still at an early stage and can take approximately four to six weeks to process. If the application is successful, the Post Office will confirm a proposal to restore a post office in Westbury town centre.”
