WESTBURY Ladies earned a memorable draw in the their first ever league game against last season’s league champions. The club was formed at the beginning of August 2022, with over 30 ladies registered to play league matches and many more training in the squad.
In front of a decent-sized crowd at Meadow Lane, the match started with both teams matching each other equally. There was no score at the half time break.
Second half kicked off with Westbury on top playing some good football and creating some good chances.
Then Chippenham had a swift counterattack ten minutes into the second half. Westbury battled to win the ball back but after a melee in the box the ball deflected off a Westbury defender for a goal to Chippenham. Westbury, galvanised by going behind, showed attacking intent and pressed for an equalizer. Just five minutes after going behind Westbury levelled.
Bex found herself with space in the box, shifted away from the Chippenham defender and buried the ball in the top right corner. Westbury continued to play the better football as Millie hit the bar from 20 yards out and Westbury had a late penalty shout denied when Alice was felled in the box.
Manager of Westbury Ladies Mark, Srawley said, “I am delighted with the result, the team battled hard and played some great football today. We surprised Chippenham considering we are a newly formed team. I would have taken a draw at the start, but we pushed a good team hard and could have won.
