Sat 19th Mar. Hellenic League Premier Division Westbury United 3 Thornbury Town 0
WESTBURY took a huge step towards securing second place with this comfortable victory in the spring sunshine!
Harvey Flippance led the way with a quick-fire double. Having created several openings in the first ten minutes where Sam Jordan and Ricky Hulbert couldn’t provide final touches, Flippance’s goals came on 13’ and 18’. The first goal was only possible thanks to a great touch, the player’s pace and a driven finish then, after visiting keeper Mackenzie Welsh had advanced and missed the ball, Flippance scored from way outside the penalty area.
The rest of the half was a non-event, with United content at 2-0 and Town defending well against throw ins and corners while not being able to create anything at the other end.
Play continued in the same vein after the break, Thornbury dealt well with an Ashton Shanley corner at which they blocked two attempts.
The third goal came on 63’; Ricky Hulbert was clattered in the middle of the pitch and Shanley’s set piece was met by Steve Hulbert with a powerful strike into the top of the net.
Town briefly got forward and had their only shots of the afternoon through George Baker which were both saved by Mark Bowden.
Flippance missed a glorious chance to score a hattrick with eight minutes remaining when he failed to convert from Sam Jordan’s cross.
Of note was Dan Jordan making his long-awaited return from serious injury in the closing stages before Jake Hutchings, Joe Stradling and Flippance all went close to adding a fourth late on.
