IT WAS a comprehensive victory for the White Horse men against Wiltshire Senior League team Marlborough Town.
Westbury played the game with a back three of Captain Dan Price, Matt Jones and Dan Jordan, who were all excellent on the night and repelled anything Marlborough threw at them.
It was a steady, patient start from Westbury, seemingly intent on bossing possession, confident that the goals would come. They spent the first ten minutes prying and probing, working the ball wide and if the final pass wasn’t on, the ball would come back into midfield to start again. On 11 minutes Westbury won a corner which was delivered by Jamie Jordan to the front post, the ball was flicked on twice and arrived at the back post for Ricky Hulbert to head home.
It took until a few seconds before the half time whistle for Westbury to double their lead; the Marlborough defence was standing strong and proving to be well organised, a left foot curling shot by Jamie Jordan was parried out by the goalkeeper but fell to Mark Robinson who had the awareness to know that Josh Ferguson was arriving in the box at speed. He fed Ferguson and Ferguson gobbled up the chance to make it 2-0.
In the second half, Jamie Jordan had a couple of chances himself, a scoop over the keeper and a cheeky lobbed volley both landed on the roof of the net. After 66 minutes Hulbert found himself goal side of the defender charging into the box with the ball at his feet. The defender went to ground in an attempt to tackle but missed the ball and caught Hulbert. Hulbert stayed on his feet and the referee played the advantage, but Hulbert missed the chance.
On 68 the tricky Jamie Jordan was at it again, back heeling the ball inside the area for Robinson to power under the keeper, who was diving to his right, to make it three.
The fourth came on 86 minutes; a quick free kick was taken by the brilliant Dan Jordan, after a foul on Jamie Jordan. It was passed to Jake Hiscocks who travelled forward and smashed a powerful low shot past the goalkeeper from about 20 yards.
Westbury were good going forward but the praise has to go to the three men at the back. They took it in turn to come forward, every ball that came near them was easily dealt with, and they were calm in possession and gave the rest of the team a foundation to attack from.
