Westbury entertained Marshfield in the latest West of England League Wiltshire Division hoping to start a winning run against one of the top teams in this league.
Westbury named an unchanged team from last week’s tied match against Swindon. They won the toss and decided to bat first, opening with the regular openers Mills and McDonald who, confronted by a superb opening spell by the Marshfield opening bowlers Lamb and Cox, only achieved 49 runs in the opening 20 overs.
When the total reached 53 Westbury lost their first wicket when Mills (24) was run out by a fine throw by Bond. McDonald was then joined by Gibbs and they pushed on before Gibbs was caught for 6. McDonald was then joined by Gill and gradually got on top of the bowling.
With the total at 125 McDonald completed his second successive 50 off 102 balls. Shortly afterwards Gill completed his 50 off 58 balls. When the total reached 163 Marshfield broke the partnership between when McDonald was out for 73.
Senneck, with the help of the lower order, took the total to 223 for 5 off their allotted 50 overs.
When Marshfield batted they made a fine start and they took the total to 45 before Westbury broke through when Mills dismissed Bond for 34. The Marshfield overseas player, Nic Badings, with the help of the rest of the batsman, took Marshfield to a fine 6 wicket win with Badings unbeaten on 109 off 101 balls in 121 minutes.
This was a disappointing day for Westbury, hopefully they can put things right next week against Calne.
