People in the Westbury community will get the chance to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day with a special hilltop ceremony on Friday 8 May which will include the lighting of a beacon by the White Horse – as reported in WHN on 23rd April.
The beacon by the White Horse will be one of more than 100 to be lit across the country and will be lit by the mayor at 9.30pm.
The ceremony will begin at 9pm and will include the bells ringing at All Saints, a tribute read by Rev Steve Jarvis and the sounding of the Last Post.
A spokesperson for Westbury Town Council said, “Peace broke out on this day 70 years ago and brought an end to nearly six years of war across Europe. We must not let this day pass without reflecting on the sacrifice, courage and determination of the people who saw us through this dark period.
“It is fitting that we should celebrate them and commemorate this historic anniversary once more through the lighting of beacons.
“A chain of more than 100 beacons will be lit across the length and breadth of the country to celebrate light emerging from the darkness of war, and the triumph of the human spirit. A chance to remember lost loved ones and the sacrifices they made to secure the peace we all enjoy today.”
