Westbury Area Family History will welcome Dr Penny Walters this Thursday 23rd May.
Penny guest lectures internationally, recently at Family Tree Live (April), and soon at Brigham Young University (July) and Roots Tech London (October); and writes articles for Family Tree magazine and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She was recently a consultant for the Channel 4 television series ‘My Family Secrets Revealed.’
This session will discuss what ethics and morality mean, and what these have to do with genealogy and family history. We’re just compiling our family tree, what possible problems could there be? Have any of you asked any family members if it’s ok to include them on your tree? Privacy and confidentiality will be addressed, and the discovery of what would have been, at the time, considered scandals. The ‘can of worms’ that DNA potentially opens will be looked at, both with collaborating (or not) with cousin matches, and ethnicity estimates.
The Westbury Area Family History Group, a branch of the Wiltshire Family History Society, meet every 4th Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the foyer of Westbury’s Methodist Church, however this talk will take place in the main church, with access via the side door in the carpark.
