Westbury Methodist Church was full on Saturday 20th September for a concert by Westbury Choral Society and guests.
Under its conductor Luke Pickett the choir encored a number of favourite pieces from recent concerts including ‘You Raise Me Up’, ‘Fields of Gold’, and ‘Rhythm of Life’.
Special guests were Upavon Military Wives Choir which was founded and is led by Westbury Choral’s current accompanist Jane Law. Belying the fact that it was only formed earlier this year the choir gave a confident and polished performance which included an ‘Abba’ selection, before being joined by the Westbury choir in the original Military Wives hit ‘Wherever You are’.
The evening was completed by solos from society members, contralto Maggie Lobb and bass Mike Kemp, while conductor Luke Pickett showed his versatility playing four short pieces for trombone.
The choir will now be concentrating on preparation for its Christmas Concert on Friday 19th December, which will include highlights from Benjamin Britten’s ‘Ceremony of Carols’ and a carol to the tune ‘All through the Night’ including a verse sung in Welsh!
Like many choirs, while always offering a warm welcome to new members in all sections, Westbury is particularly keen to attract more men. No audition is required, support will be given to anyone new to choral singing and it is not too late to start rehearsing for the Christmas concert.
