Dan Moore’s double led Westbury to their 4th win in 6 matches; the club’s best start to a season for 7 years!
It was a thundery and steamy afternoon at Meadow Lane with both sides starting on 9 points.
United, with the creativity of Dean Caslake and Matty Mantay to the fore, dominated the first half during which they only scored one of ten chances.
Dan Moore, George Bendle, Marc Scammell, Sean Brereton and Jamie Jordan all went close to opening the scoring. A combination of wayward finishing and saves by Lewis Walter kept the match goalless until the 28th minute when Moore worked space inside the box and finished with an accurate, low right-footed shot into the far corner.
Having somehow remained just a single goal behind, St George led the play after half time and equalised on 50 when Charlie Heydon spilt Lewis Wentland’s free kick to Andrew Hamilton-Dunn who tapped it in.
Heydon made a few good saves to deny Rahib Rehman and Ken Oni before Westbury’s defence of James Hounsell, Jake Stephenson and Jordan Lawrence got back on top, leading to a break away on 66 when Sean Brereton was pushed inside the penalty area and a spot kick was awarded. Moore stepped up and made it 2-1 despite Lewis Walter getting his hand to the ball.
Roman Glass seemed to lose heart and never threatened another equaliser while United went close to adding a 3rd through Bendle and Jordan.
