Westbury and District Cricket club celebrated the official opening of its new electronic scoreboard last month when it was unveiled by the mayor.
The new LED scoreboard was officially revealed by mayor of Westbury, cllr Stephen Andrews on Sunday 22nd May. It was bought using grants from Westbury Area Board and the Landfill Communities Fund from Hills Group via Community First.
Club chairman Neil Hawker said, “The cricket club has a long history of playing on this ground and our new scoreboard is another step in maintaining the club facilities for the current players and will really help us attract new youth members in the future.
“We were delighted to host a large number of former players and friends to a buffet lunch, before the mayor of Westbury, Councillor Stephen Andrews, and Colin Cooper, honorary president of the cricket club, were invited to officially open the new facility.
“The new LED scoreboard has been attached to the existing brick-built scorebox, which was originally constructed in 1990 by former players Keith Walter and Trevor Dolman, funded by Colin Cooper in memory of his late father, Laurie.
“The day’s event also included a highly entertaining 30 over game between a Chairman’s XI vs Captain’s XI, with teams made up from former, current and youth team players. With the sun shining throughout the afternoon a great day was had by all!
“It was so nice to see so many former players and friends today and we hope to make this an annual event now as everyone has enjoyed it so much.”
Westbury Area Board was represented on the day by the current chair, councillor Gordon King; also in attendance was Sarah Penfold, from Community First.
The cricket club would be delighted to hear from any new or former players, and plays 1st and 2nd team league games on Saturday afternoons at Leighton, as well as alternate Sunday games and junior fixtures throughout the week.
