THE February meeting of the Westbury and District U3A welcomed James Holden who spoke to the group about Wiltshire Gate Lodges.
The club report, “These buildings mark the entrances to the grand country houses of the gentry and aristocracy and their architectural styles frequently follow the style of the ‘big house’.
“The talk was illustrated with an impressive collection of photographs showing examples of gate lodges from around the county. Information about the origins and development of gate lodges was very interesting as were the more eccentric styles of some of the lodges.
“The next meeting will be on Tuesday 10th March at 2pm at the United Reformed Church Hall, Westbury Sally Hendry will give a talk on the Westbury Work House. For membership enquiries telephone 01373 670023. Please do join us.”
