SCHOOLCHILDREN, residents, and businesses in Westbury came out in force to support Comic Relief on Friday 15th March.
The appeal asked people across the UK to do something ‘funny for money’ and Westbury did its bit to help the appeal.
Comic Relief runs every two years, alternating with its sister project Sport Relief. The event began in 1985 to help raise cash to combat famine in Ethiopia. Since then, the appeal has raised over £800million to tackle poverty and social injustice across the UK, Africa, and some of the world’s poorest countries.
So far, this year’s appeal has raised more than £75million, with money continuing to pour in.
In Westbury, pupils at Westbury Leigh Primary School came into school with ‘crazy clothes for Comic Relief’, while staff matched that with their crazy hairdos. Staff voted for the best dressed person in each class and the pupil leadership team awarded prizes to the best in team, following a crazy fashion parade in the hall.
Mr Oakes, year 4 teacher, won the pupils’ vote to have a colourful makeover with face paint and spray string.
Students at Fairfield Farm College also wore fancy dress, with farmyard animals, Action Man, and Elvis among the characters appearing at college that day.
Pupils at Bratton Primary School took part in a sponsored cross-country run in the school grounds, with parents cheering them on despite the bleak weather.
The kitchen staff and Friends of Dilton School held a huge cake sale after school on Friday, with all proceeds going to Comic Relief.
A paper plane race, joke contest, and hair competition were among the events taking place at Bitham Brook Primary School.
Leighton Recreation centre hosted a coffee morning, with tea, cake, and exercise taster sessions.
At Matravers School, a sponsored leg wax took place at lunch-time.
