In a close competition, Dilton Marsh Primary School were the overall winners in the Westbury Junior Rugby Football Club Annual Interschool Tag Competition in which all local schools with girls and boys from years 3 and 4 took part.
Bitham Brook Primary (2 teams); Bratton Primary (2 teams); Crockerton; Westbury Leigh Primary and Dilton Marsh Primary competed against each other in a round robin event on Friday 9th May.
The winners shield for the tournament was awarded to Dilton Marsh Primary School and all participants received the 2014 Interschool Tag Tournament participation medal. Medals and the winners shield were handed out by Westbury RFC Chairman Bob Bush.
Organiser and head junior coach, Julian Phelps said, “This event is the first interschool tag rugby event held by Westbury RFC Juniors and the sun shone throughout the afternoon in this exhilarating fast-paced form of non contact rugby. Each team played with great sporting spirit under the watchful eye of the Westbury White Horse at the Westbury RFC ground.
“The Dilton Marsh team won the event by winning all of their matches with some awesome running and passing skills. Bratton Primary, Bitham Brook School and Crockerton all came very close to taking top spot, winning most of their matches. In the end with a competition total of 38 tries, Dilton Marsh took the honours and the winners shield back to their school to keep until next year.”
Ali Hyde from Dilton Marsh Primary School said, “Congratulations to our rugby team who won every match, including the final! Well done! Thank you to Mr Gaffney and the parents/grandparents who took and supported the team and for the feedback from several parents.”
One parent commented, “I have just come back from a very exciting afternoon at the rugby. Yet again the children of Dilton Marsh School have reminded me of the privilege it is to be a parent. The display of team spirit, support of one another and superb sporting attitude was evident at all times. They listened attentively to Mr Gaffney and then put into practice the play he had asked of them.”
Tag rugby is a non-contact, fast-moving game that is suitable for adults or children, and for boys and girls to play together. Its safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and liveliness of the sport, means that tag rugby is now the RFU’s official version of the game for under-7s and under-8s and is played by many primary schools throughout England.
Westbury RFC Juniors are a flourishing club with boys and girls with ages ranging from 5 to 10 years. They train every Sunday 10.00am–11.15am from September until May. They play many matches against other rugby sides in Wiltshire and this year partook in the Chippenham and Warminster Rugby Festivals.
