Westbury residents construct a bright future

RESIDENTS in Westbury have been given the opportunity to take part in a fully-funded construction course to help open doors to employment.

Chair of Westbury Town Council and town Mayor, cllr Mike Sutton, met the first group to participate in a project that’s bringing more adult learning opportunities to the town.

Ten eager residents signed up to a fully-funded construction course, where they’ve learned all the skills necessary to gain their CSCS construction card – a requirement when working on construction sites.

The adult learning project was created by a partnership of Sovereign Housing Association, Westbury Town Council, The Laverton Institute, FM Business School and Wiltshire Council.

The organisations worked with residents to find out the kind of jobs people in Westbury wanted to do, and then connected them with suitable courses, delivered locally.

Kane Morgan-Smith, one of the course participants said, “Having the CSCS course running in Westbury has been excellent. By attending this course it has opened lots of doors for employability – not just for me, but all the other people on the course. I have enjoyed it thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone else who wants to get into construction.”

Scott Jacobs-Lange, community development officer at Sovereign Housing Association said, “This first course was taught by tutors from Bath College; future courses will be organised according to local demand. We’d welcome suggestions about the qualifications that people in Westbury would like to gain.”

If you’d like to discuss ideas for local employment-related learning, please email: scott.jacobs-lange @sovereign.org.uk

If you’d like any support with employment and skills, or would like to find out about other local opportunities, please visit the Work Wiltshire website: https://workwiltshire.co.uk
