LOCAL shops and businesses have reported an overall positive reaction from customers to the new face coverings rule.
But concern has also been raised that the rule might be putting off non-essential shoppers from visiting the town.
On Friday 24th July it became compulsory to wear a face covering inside shops and supermarkets, indoor shopping centres, transport hubs, banks and takeaways. Police can hand out fines of up to £100 if people do not comply.
Bob Summerfield from Imperial Charity, which has a household furniture charity shop on Warminster Road and a more general charity shop on the High Street, told White Horse News, “Overall since the rule was introduced, people have been good and worn face coverings. But the rule is off-putting for some people – so for someone whose visit to the shop is not necessary, they may not come to the shop at all.
“So this new rule could impact the number of people visiting the town to browse shops and find something they didn’t know they needed.”
Vicky from Mobility Works added, “Some people might be put off, and be more inclined to use the internet – but we need to discourage this as you won’t get the same level of service that you need.
“However, we’re not really a shop that people will come and mosey around in – so we haven’t seen a difference. Our customers have been happy to wear face coverings, no questions asked. But it is early days.”
Andrew Elliott from Elliott’s Traditional Butchers said, “I was a little worried when the news came that face masks would be mandatory – but so far there appears to be no impact. Most customers are wearing face coverings, and we are encouraging customers to wear them by wearing them ourselves.”
Phil Chester from Westbury Tackle said, “Everyone has been coming into the shop wearing masks with no arguments. I wasn’t too worried when the government announced the new rule – everyone has got used to the government changing their advice on a weekly basis!
“I do feel like the government is shutting the door after the horse has bolted – it seems a little late to introduce this rule. But so far, everyone seems fine about the new rule.”
