Westbury closed off their league campaign against Avonvale at Knott field.
After a successful sponsors and VPs’ lunch, the game started with both teams looking to throw the ball wide. Avonvale piled the pressure on Westbury’s try line but after a spell of outstanding defence, the ball was cleared by fly half and stand in captain Aaron Vaughan.
Westbury then began to put pressure on Avonvale, with their backs running some clinical lines. However the Avonvale defence held strong and after a lot of toing and froing, Westbury were awarded a penalty to finally break the deadlock. Fly half Aaron Vaughan kicked the penalty to make the score Westbury 3 Avonvale 0.
Avonvale started the second half well and began challenging Westbury’s defence, putting together some excellent handling, but Westbury’s defence held firm.
After 20 minutes Westbury pinned Avonvale back into their own 22 and after being awarded a scrum 5 metres out, the dominant Westbury pack drove the Avonvale scrum backwards over the line, allowing number 8 Ash Commins to touch the ball down. Unfortunately Vaughan missed the extras Westbury 8 Avonvale 0.
Westbury believed they had the game in the bag, however Avonvale thought otherwise, piling forward and after some excellent handling, they broke through the defence to score and with the conversion added, making the score 8-7, the last 5 minutes proved tense for both teams. Westbury held on to finish their season with a win.
Luke Hames, representing Martin and Co, picked stand-in scrum half Nigel Kershaw as man of the match.
