With a membership now exceeding 40 people, Westbury’s own ‘Community Shed’ is facing its most exciting year to date
The project, initiated by current chairman Dan Gmaj and Westbury community engagement manager, Liam Cripps, in September 2015 has been an exercise in positive community engagement to achieve an ‘access all areas’ workshop and allotment complex in Westbury, delivered for all its members, at minimal cost.
Dan Gmaj said, “This has been largely achieved by many ‘happily given’ voluntary hours of dedication from a small number of members committed to keeping the project developing and above all, open two full days a week since our Alfred Street workshop launched in Sept 2016!
“This is no small task, as any organisation reliant upon volunteer help will have witnessed!
“A massive ‘thank you’ to the individuals who, without which we could not open our doors. You know who you are and you should all be justly proud of your achievements to date. The more we do however, the more help we will need, so please do come and get involved.
“So what is on the cards for 2018? After our second annual AGM on Friday 23rd February at Grassacres Hall (3pm) we will be discussing exciting next stages for our existing allotment and polytunnel complex, the ongoing planning process to site our (now purchased) portacabin workshop at Grassacres Hall.
“We will also be announcing one of the most exciting developments in community teamwork that Westbury has seen in recent years, with the soon to be launched ‘Westbury Community Project’ which will be bringing much-needed resources to improve outcomes for many in our town.
“This is very much a ‘joint venture’ with a select group of ‘like-minded’ individuals, organisations and institutions in our town. You will be hearing a great deal more about this very soon we hope! Watch this space!
“Could you help shape the future of Westbury Shed? I had not intended remaining as chairman beyond this year and am currently assessing my commitments and possible future work with the Westbury Community Project which will be a massive undertaking for those who get involved.
“With the commitment of just a few dedicated individuals we can let these projects run beautifully, all by themselves, but without a committed few, the reality is that they can so easily fail. Come and join in on the conversation to improve outcomes for many in our town and have a whole lot of fun in the process. Grown ups are allowed to have fun you know! Honest
“For those that are new to the project, WestburyShed.org (NPO) is a non-age or gender specific community shed project that is all about the value to everyday health of positive human contact in the pursuit of hobbies, crafts and creative activities. It’s all about the people and it really is that simple! It’s ok to not be ok and for all of us, some days will be better than others. At Westbury Shed there is no pressure or expectation, a cuppa and a chat in good company can make all the difference. You can contact via email: west buryshed@gmail.com or phone: 01373 865 057.”
