A WESTBURY short mat bowls player will be part of the England team who will take on his home county of Wiltshire at a match which will be played in Melksham on Sunday.
England u21 player Aidan Wicks, who plays for Westbury Blue Circle, and fellow England u21 player Tom Bright, who plays for Bromham, will face the Wiltshire players who take on the cream of England’s young short mat bowlers on Sunday next (15th February) at the Christie Miller Sports Centre, Melksham.
This is the final warm-up game for the under 21s before they play in the British Isles Championships in May. Players from all over England will make their way to Christie Miller Sports Centre, Melksham. This is the very first time that an England team has played against Wiltshire at short mat bowls
Wiltshire’s team is made up of seasoned inter-county players, established club players and a number of other youngsters now playing in Wiltshire short mat bowls leagues. Players from across the county from Winterslow in the south and Crudwell and Hullavington in the north (and all points between) will come together to take on the cream of England’s youngsters.
The game will start at 10am and should be completed by around 4pm. England team manager, Brian Claessen, thanked Wiltshire for arranging the ‘friendly’. “It should be a good test for my team,” he said.
Wiltshire county president, Colin Waldeck (Seend) said, “We are pleased and privileged to be playing this game. We hope to do well and we hope that more younger players will be encouraged to play short mat bowls.
“Aidan and Tom are already England squad players and we have a few more Wiltshire youngsters who are looking to impress the England management.”
