A TEAM of four from the Westbury wine bar Suave recently raised over £3,000 for Cancer Research UK by walking two marathons in two days in the Jordan desert.
Shelley Sperring, Joanna Hillman, Kev Sheppard and Kate McCarthy travelled to Wadi Rum in Jordan last month, also known as the Valley of the Moon, with the aim of raising money for charity by walking through the desert for two days as part of the Jordan Ultra Challenge.
The challenge asks people to travel 26 miles a day for two days at their own pace, with fundraisers taking in the dramatic desert scenery of Wadi Rum with vast silent landscapes, ancient sun-baked riverbeds and sand dunes, as well as the eighth wonder of the world, the ancient city of Petra.
Shelley from Suave explained how this fundraising event came about saying, “We were all sat in Suave one night after enjoying a few wines and we wondered what we could all do together to challenge ourselves and raise some money for charity.
“Someone mentioned the Jordan Ultra Challenge and before we knew it, we were all signed up and ready to go! We started training for the challenge in September of last year and we all spent our weekends walking, no matter the weather.
“However, no amount of training could have prepared us for the conditions in Jordan, as temperatures rose to 42° when we spent the two days in the desert. To say this was challenging would be an understatement!
“We chose to raise money for Cancer Research UK as it is something that has affected all of us over the past few years. Our fundraising page is still open if anyone would like to support the cause.”
