WESTBURY, with Dan Hurkett again outstanding in midfield, picked up a fine home win to close the mid table gap in a match which saw both teams squander more chances than they scored.
The match was played on a beautiful afternoon but the pitch was very heavy after the recent wet weather.
United winger Simon Millard and Devizes striker Mark Barnes should both have scored in one on one situations early on but both shot straight at the respective goalkeepers!
The opening goal came on 27 minutes when Millard’s set piece from the right found its way to Marc Lanfear and he opened the scoring with a close range finish.
Westbury then doubled their lead on 40 when debutant Matt Dyer raced in from the left wing to take a touch and fire Lanfear’s cross into the net.
Barnes missed twice more when well placed with Alex Shaftoe saving both efforts, but the 2nd of those found its way to Lee Himsworth and he scrambled in Town’s goal just before half time.
The 2nd half was a quiet affair until play opened up in the closing stages and tackles began to fly in with Devizes having Gareth Davies sent off for two yellow cards.
Westbury could have made sure of the points before the end but Marc Scammell failed to score with two headers; the first a free header that went over the bar and the second being cleared off the line. With Town pushing men forward Mark Young counter attacked and played in Wayne Wheeler who somehow put a shot wide!
