WESTBURY picked up their biggest win in a long time, but the match was overshadowed by the sending off of three Corsham players!
This was a much needed victory for Matty Bown’s men and a fine reaction to the poor defeat a week earlier. Joe Murray put United ahead after just two minutes with a fine volley into the roof of the net after Lee Salter’s set piece had deflected into his path.
Town had a period of good play with Ryan Tyrell to the fore; the winger going close to an equaliser when Simon Millard blocked his attempt, as well as creating a few chances that went begging, as Nathan Phillimore shot wide and Booker Woodford brought a fine save out of Alex Shaftoe.
Westbury went close to doubling their lead when Anthony Brown made a great save to tip Millard’s shot wide before Salter trebled his team’s lead with two penalties in the closing stages of the 1st half; firstly shooting a spot kick to Anthony Brown’s left on 39 with the keeper getting a fingertip to the ball, and then to the opposite side on 45 after an off the ball incident that saw Liam Brown receive a straight red card after clashing with Nathan Hallett. United nearly scored twice before finally making it 4-0 on 55 when Millard nodded in after Charlie Walton and Wayne Wheeler were both denied at close range. Anthony Brown prevented further damage by saving well from Millard in a one on one situation, while Town came close to a consolation through Jack Morris and Richard Boltor. A fierce tackle on 86 between Matt Friendship and Jack Morris saw the latter sent off with the United player lucky to escape similar, then as a result of dissent visiting captain Matt Windle was shown a 2nd yellow and therefore he was red carded too! Westbury took advantage of the visitor’s predicament to notch an offside looking 5th through Mark Young after Millard set him up instead of shooting, and a final goal by the energetic Millard who ran clean through after gaining the ball from the restart!
*STAR MAN – Simon Millard (Westbury United).
