NEW manager Matty Bown opened with a win in Westbury’s first match of the season away at Portishead Town.
Matty had to wait longer then expected for his first game as the match was delayed by 30 minutes due to an accident on the M5 causing Westbury and the referee to be late.
When the match did get under way, both sides were slow to start with and despite United creating a few good chances, the half ended goalless.
In the second half the visitors began to take control and dominated both possession and chances. On the hour, following a good passage of play down the right, Simon Millard fired across goal for Nathan Hallett to tap home from two yards, United continued to dominate and in the 75th minute their advantage was doubled when Phil Hampson played in to Millard, to fire home from inside the six yard box.
Manager Matty Bown said, “It’s always important to get off to a good start so to get a win and a clean sheet is excellent for us. In my opinion we dominated throughout and deserved the win. Our fitness levels were excellent and it’s good to see the hard work pay off. To come away to Portishead and get a result is fantastic as it’s not the easiest place to come and get a result, so we are pleased.
“We are in a rebuilding process as we try to change the attitude and mentality at the club and we are working hard with the youth to bring them through. I don’t think this season we will be realistically challenging near the top, but this season is all about consolidation and maybe next year we can go for a promotion push.”
