A vital victory for Westbury in this match between two of the bottom four clubs, however they made extremely hard work of beating a Wincanton team who had two players red carded for dissent and it took a 97th minute goal to settle the result!
There was a distinct lack of quality in the first half with both sides regularly giving the ball away and a frantic nature to the play. Home keeper Charlie Heydon did well to save from Dan Wise who was also off target twice while Taoufic Ben-Salem showed good skill but was also wayward with his finish. At the other end Shav Allen broke through but saw his pull back cleared with Josh Ferguson threatening to finish then Allen headed wide after a good move.
United scored a wonderful goal on 26 minutes: a clever move between Allen and Ferguson set up Dan Moore who fired in an unstoppable opening goal past the advancing Jordan Robertson.
Town were the better side early in the second half with Ben-Salem and Kieron Davis having efforts blocked during a spell of pressure, but United went 2-0 up on 58: Allen broke through and forced Robertson into a fine save, however the ball rebounded to Moore whose strike was parried over the line by Robertson.
Visiting full back Pat Golden saw red following a second yellow card in the aftermath of the goal before. His team mates looked to get back into the match as Ben-Salem set up Wise whose strike was well parried by Heydon.
The huge talking point came around the 75th minute when Ben-Salem, who had already been cautioned for dissent, talked himself into his second yellow card and took all of five minutes and an escort of five teammates to leave the pitch.
To their credit Wincanton threw it all into getting back into the match and, always dangerous at set pieces, pulled a goal back through Andy Holmes’ header on 79.
Home keeper Charlie Heydon did well to hold Kieron Davis’ header at another set piece before Ferguson received the ball from Marc Scammell and produced a composed finish to make it 3-1 and settle the home nerves.
