20 walkers from the Westbury Walkers group set out on 8.5 mile walk led by Mary Taylor from Burrington Coombe on the edge of the Mendip Hills on 10th April.
The route was fairly strenuous, taking the group up a very long and steep track through Mendip Lodge Wood and through Dolebury Warren to the large Iron Age fort at the top. It was then down again, ready for the next long haul up to the highest point on Black Down from where both Blagdon and Chew Valley lakes, as well as the Welsh coastline and the second Severn crossing, could be clearly seen.
The day began fairly bright and the forecast rain held off until the evening, much to the relief of the walkers as a chilly wind blew fiercely across the exposed Black Down as they descended, passing wild ponies en route.
It was with relief that everyone reached the shelter of the trees for the final part of the walk along the Limestone Link back to Burrington Coombe.
