WESTBURY Town Council has agreed to consult with the people of Westbury to see whether they would like a war memorial back in the Market Place.
Councillor Mike Cuthbert-Murray envisions that a replica of the obelisk memorial, which used to be positioned in front of the old Town Hall in the Market Place, could be erected in the same location. This would be created in addition to the war memorial in Edward Street.
The Market Place memorial was built in the 1920s, but was taken down in the 1970s.
Cllr Cuthbert-Murray originally put the idea forward last year, but the town council decided not to pursue it at the time. However, on Monday 4th March the council agreed to set up a working group, which will consider the best way to find out whether the people of Westbury are behind the idea.
Cllr Cuthbert-Murray says that re-instating a memorial in the Market Place would help restore some of Westbury’s heritage.
The Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion says it has no objection to the idea, providing it would not affect their annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service.
Chair of the local branch, Mary Kneen said, “We would not object, providing there are no designs on moving our memorial and it would not affect our service. As long as it doesn’t detract from our memorial and our Remembrance service, it’s nothing to do with us.”
