An event held this month to aimed at collecting stories and memorabilia related to Westbury during the war years has been hailed a success by the organisers.
The event, which saw residents share their wartime memories and war artefacts and view a collection of wartime photos, was hosted by local historians David Jenkins and Julie Davis at Wesley Methodist Church on 7th September.
“We were able to record some interesting memories, which we aim to preserve as part of our local history,” said David. “A number of artefacts were brought along by residents, including medals from the Great War and a pace stick given to a local resident that was made by an Italian prisoner of war during WWII.”
David and Julie are aiming to hold a similar event next year, along with two talks planned later this year about Westbury’s involvement in WWII.
“We’d like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to this important project,” David added.
Anyone with wartime memories or artefacts to share is encouraged to get in touch via email: davidjenkins53@hotmail.com or julie.davis@wiltshire.gov.uk.
