MEMBERS of the Westbury Youth Club rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to design and create a new mosaic for the Westbury Community Project (WCP), as a way to thank the charity for allowing the club to operate out of its facility on Eden Vale Road.
The project has been going on since August of last year and Beth Mullins, the Youth Club leader, says every member played their part in making the mosaic a reality.
“When lockdown lifted and we had our new home, we planned for our members to give something back to WCP from where we run. We decided to run a mosaic project with donations of old bathroom and kitchen tiles from the people of Westbury and surrounding villages. We decided that we would create Westbury community projects logo out of mosaics for them to display within the centre.
“We got to work over many weeks the members did a little bit each time. The members saw the project through from start to finish- from drawing out the boarder to applying the grout.
“Our members got to learn how to create a mosaic and they got to add their own touch to the design. They decided that they wanted to add buttons to the background to make it look more unique and eye catching.
“The final piece was handed over to Kevin Down, WCP development manager a few weeks ago. This was then presented to Westbury community projects trustees at their last meeting where they agreed that it will be displayed in the foyer of the centre so every user of the centre will be welcomed by it.
“The centre is a community project, it’s nice that the youth club and the young people of Westbury can give something back, as without the venue we wouldn’t have a home or a youth club in Westbury and the young people who come along each week appreciate the space they have. We have to say a massive thank you to Ria who oversaw the project and all our members who helped make the mosaic even if it was just cutting or gluing just one tile.”
Westbury Youth Club is held from 4.45pm to 6.15pm every Wednesday during termtime and has a range of weekly activities for 11– 19-year-olds (up to 25 with learning disabilities) to enjoy.
