After weeks of speculation, Tarmac has announced the date for the demolition of its Westbury site’s 400 foot chimney and local people are invited to watch.
The landmark chimney which dominates the Westbury skyline will be brought down by controlled explosion on Sunday 18th September at about 6.45am. The exact time will be announced nearer the date and the demolition is subject to the weather.
The demolition will symbolically mark the end of over 40 years of cement production at the site, which was closed in 2009. The distribution of cement operations at the site remain unchanged.
Jonathan Toyn, senior estates manager at Tarmac said, “Tarmac is asking members of the public to view the demolition only from the safety of the White Horse viewing area rather than watching from nearby footpaths or farmers’ fields.
“The White Horse viewing area gives an outstanding view of the whole site and the community will be able to see this much anticipated event safely at a distance. The White Horse viewing area will also be the only location where Tarmac will provide people with a count-down to the moment of the demolition so they do not miss the spectacular event.
“We are grateful to local residents for their continuing support and cooperation whilst demolition of much of the site has been under way and we will of course ensure the local community is kept updated on our plans.”
Demolition is permitted by Wiltshire Council under the Prior Notification process which agreed commitments to manage safety and security, public amenity, ecological and environmental controls.
