Westbury’s celebrated Street Fayre takes place on Saturday 12th July in the Market Place, followed by an evening concert.
The Street Fayre, which is organised by Westbury Town Council and local organisations, is a biennial event which takes place throughout the town centre.
During the daytime there is a mixture of events, displays and activities taking place, culminating in an evening of musical entertainment in Westbury’s historic Market Place.
Westbury town clerk, Keith Harvey said, “We are now at the end of two years’ planning and organising of this very popular free event for the residents of Westbury and surrounding villages.
“Fingers crossed, the weather will be in our favour for what we hope will be a memorable day and evening, where everyone can enjoy the many attractions we are bringing to the town.
“The daytime event starts at 10.00am and finishes at 4.00pm and hopefully we have something for all ages.
“In the evening we have our street concert in the Market Place starting at 6.00pm where you will hear local bands performing, before our tribute band which this year is Abba Fever.
“Finally we hope everyone has a great day followed by an enjoyable family evening at the street concert .”
During the day, between 10.00am and 4.00pm, in the Market Place there will be a mobile zoo, including some exotic animals, and arena events including clog dancing, belly dancing, majorettes, karate demonstration, pig show and fun dog show (sponsored by Garston Vets).
Throughout the town centre there will be street entertainers and food stalls whilst pony rides, supplied by White Horse Equestrian Centre, will be at All Saints churchyard.
Charity and local organisation stalls will be set up at Maristow Street and a continental market will be at the upper level of the High Street car park.
Other entertainment will include a puppet show, funfair rides, inflatables, miniature railway and climbing wall, ensuring there is something for everyone.
A Historic Walking Tour will take place from 2.30pm until 3.15pm allowing people to discover the hidden treasures of Westbury’s historical buildings. The meeting point will be at the Westbury Town Council’s street fair stall in Westbury High Street.
From 6.00pm until midnight the Street Fayre focuses on the Market Place with a lively programme of music and entertainment taking place on the main stage area.
There will be a performance from Westbury’s own Lauren Medway who reached the very first final of the Live&Unsigned national competition at the O2, when she was just 11 and won Matravers School Young Musician last year.
The evening event will also include local bands and performers, plus Abba Fever, one of Britain’s top Abba tribute bands that should have everyone singing along to hits like Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia and Money Money Money!
Local artist Penney Ellis will be at the Street Fayre on Maristow Street as part of her ‘Westbury & Me’ photography project. An exhibition of images, taken by local people under the guidance of Penney, capturing unique and quirky features of Westbury will be on display in the windows of shops, businesses and public buildings around the town centre.
Penney explains, “At the street fair I will give out trail maps for people to find the photos. People are invited to follow a picture trail matching photos to their locations. Participants who complete the trail will have an opportunity to win a place on a six-week digital photography course in September.”
Westbury Mayor cllr Christine Mitchell said, “A lot of hard work is put in to making this event such a success, as we have seen in previous years, and the town council working group would not be able to do this without the help of other groups in the town and the help and commitment of our town council staff who go above and beyond the call of duty.
“We have a lot of things lined up for this year; it has always been an enjoyable event and we hope the people of Westbury will enjoy this year’s line -up.”
There will be free parking in all Westbury car parks for the day.
